چکیده

The microbial communities inferred in silica sinter rocks, based on multiscale morphological features (fabrics and textures) the presence of lipid biomarkers their carbon isotopic composition, are evaluated Krýsuvík geothermal area Iceland. Close to vent environments (T > 75 °C pH 1.7‒3), stream floors capped with homogeneous vitreous crusts breccia levels, no distinct recognizable silicified microbes. About 4 m far from vents 75‒60 3‒6) beyond < 60 6‒7.6), sinters, including wavy palisade laminated bubble fabrics, differ between abandoned meanders desiccated ponds. Fabric texture variances related changes ratio filament/coccoid microbes associated porosity. Coatings epicellular silica, less than 2 µm thick, favor identification individual filaments, whereas coalescence opal spheres into agglomerates precludes recognition original textures Episodic fluctuations physico-chemical conditions surface waters controlled acidic hydrolysis biomarkers. Wavy fabrics pond margins comprise fatty acids, mono- dialkyl glycerol, diethers, monoalkyl glycerol esters small traces 10-methyl branched C16 C18 acids archaeol, indicative intergrowths cyanobacteria, Aquificales, sulfate reducing bacteria methanogenic archaea. In contrast, ponds vs. absence bacteriohopanetetrol, reflecting different cyanobacterial contributions. δ13C values range −22.7 −32.9‰, but (pond) have much wider ranges those (meander), palisade, dissolved inorganic (DIC) sources a decrease 13C downstream outflow channels, heavier closer depleted

Experimental simulation of evaporation-driven silica sinter formation and microbial silicification in hot spring systems.

Evaporation of silica-rich geothermal waters is one of the main abiotic drivers of the formation of silica sinters around hot springs. An important role in sinter structural development is also played by the indigenous microbial communities, which are fossilized and eventually encased in the silica matrix. The combination of these two factors results in a wide variety of sinter structures and f...

Microbial Diversity of Acidic Hot Spring (Kawah Hujan B) in Geothermal Field of Kamojang Area, West Java-Indonesia

Microbial communities in an acidic hot spring, namely Kawah Hujan B, at Kamojang geothermal field, West Java-Indonesia was examined using culture dependent and culture independent strategies. Chemical analysis of the hot spring water showed a characteristic of acidic-sulfate geothermal activity that contained high sulfate concentrations and low pH values (pH 1.8 to 1.9). Microbial community pre...

Geothermal Energy in Iceland

Due to Iceland’s location on the Mid-Atlantic ridge, the island is provided with a great amount of geothermal energy. Hence, Iceland is well on the way to becoming completely independent of fossil fuels. Whereas high-temperature areas are mainly used for electricity generation, the more frequent low-temperature areas are utilized for direct application like space heating, bathing and greenhouse...

Succession and growth strategy of a spring microbial community from kezhou sinter in china

The succession and growth strategy of a spring microbial community under earthquake action were investigated. The majority of pre-earthquake isolates belonged to the Gammaproteobacteria, including two numerically dominant Stenotrophomonas sp. RB25 and Acinetobacter sp. RB11 (r-strategists). The predominant post-earthquake isolates were Alphaproteobacteria, with Rhizobium sp. RA42 (K-strategists...

Portrait of a Geothermal Spring, Hunter’s Hot Springs, Oregon

Although alkaline Hunter's Hot Springs in southeastern Oregon has been studied extensively for over 40 years, most of these studies and the subsequent publications were before the advent of molecular methods. However, there are many field observations and laboratory experiments that reveal the major aspects of the phototrophic species composition within various physical and chemical gradients o...
